Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore how cognitive and affective empathy differ across age groups in Korea. Total 282 healthy adults participated in two age groups (132 young adults aged 18~27 years, M=20.70; 150 older adults aged 64~91 years, M=72.09) using a self-report measure of empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index, IRI). Participants completed two subscales of IRI: Empathic concern measure affective empathy, while perspective taking measure cognitive empathy. Older and younger adults were comparable with regard to cognitive empathy. Older adults scored higher on affective empathy relative to the younger adults. Contrary to previous findings, there were no sex differences in both cognitive and affective empathy. The results were discussed in terms of trait versus state empathy distinction. The limitations of this study were also discussed.
